A Birthday Poem for Oriel

There is a 6 year old boy who lives in Israel
His name is Oriel.
He has a sister named Daphna
And a brother named Betzalel.

You were born on The 10th of Teves
In English on the 22nd of December.
These are two dates
so very, very special to us
and that we shall always remember.

They are the dates
six years ago
that you joined our Family.
Everyone "oohed" and "aahed"
and said "what a very, very, very
handsome boy is he!"

Now you are six, such a big boy,
We understand you like Penguins
and leggos are among
your favorite toys.

You are so sweet and wonderful
in so many ways,
It's such fun to hear about all you do
in your Gan and when you play.

Your Birthday Box
is on its way

Trip to Israel

An article that this editor has been meaning to write about in these pages for a long time. Bubi and Zadi came to Israel fo the most wonderful trip ever.
They arrived off the plane at the Ghedini residance, because of the taxi drivers warnings the Ghedini Family were able to greet them downstairs and help them in with their case. Bubi and Zaidy had a rather uneventful trip, though one fillled with antisipation. They were bundled inside with lots of hugs and promptly began handing out presents. They were offered sunflower cup cakes and the smell of baked bread alerted them to what was coming for lunch. Aunt Deborah popped in later in the day acompanied by Sarah, Dan was still tied up at the army. Burgers and Schnizels were ordered from Burgeres bar and there was a very jovial feast.
The engorged family went the next day to the zoo and where they saw pretty well all of the animals the children had a arvelous time and wanted to go back the next day. It was pizza for supper from Leonardos.
The day after that the family took a slow day and went to the park with the helta-skelter slide. The evening was Dan's swearing in ceremony at the Kotel. The ceremony was a very moving experiance, according to eye witnesses. Bubi and Zadi came back to the Ghedini household for what was to be their last night their on that trip.
Friday Bubi helped the editor perpare chopped liver and chicken only part of a spectacular meal hosted at Aunt Deborah's house. The Ghedini famil returned to Aunt Deborah's for lunch and left for their residance before the close of Shabbat.
Bubi and Zadi joined them again later on Sunday, they spent the afternoon doing jigsaw puzzles and playing "go-to". There was a wonderful Chinese meal after which Abba arrived home just in the nick of time to enjoy too. Then there were goodbyes as the taxi came to take Bubiand Zadi back to the airport.

Dear Sweet Marlena:

Although it is sad to know that you cannot see anymore, we are relieved to read that you are otherwise doing well, and especially being a "senior". Zaidy and I know all about being "seniors"; it's definitely not for whimps. While faces may be blured or even indistinguishable, we know that you have not, nor will ever, lose the love and comfort and security that you feel in your home. And that love reaches alllllllllllllllllllllllll across the oceans to places far away like America, and I'm sure England, too. But the best and most loving and caring come from right within your immediate surroundings; although we might have to "tone down" a bit speaking about love from Chew. We send you hugs and love and look forward to "making you nice" in about six weeks.

Hello Precious Oriel, Precious Betzalel and Precious Daphna:

We hope that you are all well and happy, and enjoyed all 8 Days of Chanukah.

Right now, here in Schaumburg, Illinois, United States of America it is lunch time and also the last day of Chanukah so guess what I'm eating? Fried worms? Naaaa, they are yucky and not even kosher. Guess again? Baked fingernails? Nooooooooooo, more yucky, but funny. Latkees? Did I hear one of you say "Latkees"? You are soooooooo right...Bubi is eating potato latkees for the last day of Chanukah! You are all so very, very smart.

Do you hear music? I do...you know why...because Bubi and Zaidy are now dancing. Why are we dancing? Because we are silly? No, we are dancing because we are soooooooooooooooooooooo excited that we have tickets to come see you next month! Next month....that's a loooooooooong time away! Well, it is, from today, 47 days to see you. That is after seven Shabbases, Mertz Hashem, we will see you!!! YIPPEE!!! We can't wait! In the mean time, we'll dance, but not eat fried worms or baked fingernails!

The exuberance could be felt through this communication even though it was sent 6000 miles away. The staff of the Boggler jumped up and told everyone they knew. Today? asked Betzalel. I love Bubi. said Daphna. Oriel is thinking about making Bubi and Zaidy a present.

Oooh, how fun and delicious is Chanukah. Well, tonight is the First Night of Chanukah and Zaidy and I lit the first candle here in Schaumburg, Illinois USA. My Chanukiyah is very, very, very special to me. Do you know why? Because my Bubi Bertha (Of Blessed Memory) gave it to me 48 years ago!!! That's a looooooooooooong time ago. I was 18 years old and my Bubi gave it to me for a Chanukah present and I've kept and used it all these years. My Bubi, your Great Great Grandmother, would have loved you all VERRRRRRRRY much.
Now we are going to enjoy our potato latkees with applesauce. What do you like on your potato latkees? I bet your Mummy makes her own and that they are very, very yuuuuuuuuuummy. We know your Mummy makes THE BEST donuts! Bubi made Zaidy one of his very favorite desserts; apple cranberry crumble, only the top didn't "crumble", but it's delicious anyways.
We hope you all enjoy the Chanukah presents and wish we were there with you now. We miss you very, very much.

Oriel, Zaidy and I wanted to tell you what a FABULOUS job you did with your letter "F". You have such a good writing. They all were so clear and brillantly done. We also wish you lots of fun wearing your wonderful new bat shoes. They sound terrific. And Yasher Koach on reading an entire book in one night....wow, what a super accomplishment. You bring us such joy!

Betzalel, Zaidy and I wanted to tell you that it is sooooooooooo wonderful that you are now toliet trained! What a biiiiiiiiiiiig boy you are. That was a really BIG accomplishment. The pizza with pineapple sure sounds yummy....did you make that up by yourself? And super terrific, too, that you are learing to read Hebrew and doing so well in school. You bring us such joy!

Daphna, Zaidy and I wanted to tell you how lovely it is to hear about your helping your Mummy bake yummy cookies, and being such a good helper. You must be having lots and lots of fun making your drawings. We would love to see them, too. And what a big and smart girl you are asking about Hashem. You bring us such joy!

Okay...who likes fish sticks for dinner, raise your hands...I'm raising my hand too because I think fish sticks are one of the yummiest foods. I put cocktail sauce on mine, do you? And sweet corn, oooh, so, so good. I like to put lots of butter on mine...do you? And doesn't it feel wierd when some of the pieces get stuck between your teeth? Yuch....

Well, I think right now you are all sleeping because it is very late by you, but if I were there with you in Israel, right before you fell asleep, I would lean over and I would give you a kiss and whisper in your ears, just like I did for your Abba when he was a little boy, "Good Night, Love You, Sweet Dreams".

Wow, you sure had a fun time on Shabbat!
Guess what Bubi and Zaidy are doing today? Guess....OK, besides loving and missing you all soooooooooooooo much. We are wrapping your Chanukah presents! Yes...we have them all wrapped and ready to go to the post office tomorrow, and then they will make the loooooooooooong journey on an airplane from Schaumburg, Illinois United States allllllllllllllll the way to you in Bet Shemesh, ISRAEL! They will make this long journey with LOTS OF LOVE for ALL of you!
